Hey Mozilla, what's up with the version numbers?
Mozilla Thunderbird just asked me, "Do you want to upgrade to Thunderbird 5.0 now?"
Thunderbird 5.0 now??? What the heck happened to version 4? I am currently using version 3.11.
That's just as bad as Mozilla Firefox. Just seems like the other day I just upgraded to Firefox version 5.0. During the upgrade I saw the link proclaiming the "Future of Firefox" for the version code named Aurora.
When you go to download Aurora for a test drive, you will notice that it is Firefox version 7.
Huh, version 7? So we are going to skip version 6? Well not exactly, there is a Beta version of Firefox that is actually version 6. But seriously folks, if I can test drive the future with version 7, why do I even want to mess with version 6? I don't need no stinking version 6!
Are you now totally confused as to what version of Mozilla software is right for you? Yea, me too.
Microsoft Internet Explorer is already up to version 8 and we can't be feeling inferior if our version of software we are using, such as Mozilla Firefox is only version 5, right? 8 is better than 5 right?
There used to be some logic to software naming conventions, and I really have to believe that Mozilla feels there is some psychological need to have larger version numbers so they are on par with other software versions.
Geek Spin on the bin Laden Raid
What's the question that is currently on my mind? What's on bin Laden's hard drive?
As the news first broke that there was a bunch of technology captured in the raid, I wrote this article... Osama bin Laden's Computer Seized in Raid
As the world learns of the elite group known as SEAL Team Six, I am thinking of what they will recover as far as computer data from Osama. This could be the greatest victory yet in the war on terror. It does indeed sounds like the ultimate CSI event!
While it may be quite awhile before we know the complete extent of the wealth of knowledge recovered, there was confirmation by the White House that this could be something really big!
Check out this follow up article ... White House Adviser Confirms Bin Laden Raid Intelligence Jackpot
Since this is meant to be a Geek Spin on the raid, I'll keep my social commentary aside from this for now, but let's just say, maybe my next post will be how we can raid something in Pakistan just for the practice?
What is Delicious? Social Bookmarking in Simple Terms
On a few social networking sites I posted that I was happy to learn that social bookmarking site Delicious was getting a new owner, Yahoo Delicious Sold to YouTube Founders, and it sounds like it's time to go back and play on Delicious.
That raised the question, what is Delicious? what is Social bookmarking?
First, the bookmarking...
You organize bookmarks by topics, or tags. As you are viewing sites you want to comeback to later, instead of saving them to your browser, where only one computer can see them later, you save them to a website, so than you can view them from any computer.
On the bookmarking side, the problem is solved for many issues. If you are at a friends house and you want to bookmark a page, you now have a way of doing it. If you find an answer to a question at home that you want to use at your computer at work, your problem is solved.
Now, the social...
Your bookmarks are shared on a website where anyone can see them. You tag your bookmarks by a special topic. You make a few friends on the internet that also are looking for sites about that same topic. Now your bookmarks on the same topic can be saved and sorted among friends looking for similar information.
Yep, sounds pretty cool doesn't it?
